A glimpse into the mind of the maker

FLY IN SCHOOL

An active multimedia workshop of around 50 to 60 minutes, in which students are visually challenged right to the edge of their seats.

The performance is deliberately short, precisely the attention span of many young minds. Long enough to be drawn in, short enough that no one gets lost. And then something special happens: the students see it twice! Who gets to watch the same performance twice in quick succession, with different eyes each time?

Students get a look behind the scenes of the theatre maker's kitchen. They get a taste of how one simple ingredient, a bowl of soup, is served up as an entire universe.

With FLY IN SCHOOL, volDaan Theater flies straight into your school. A unique combination in which visual theatre sharpens the imagination.

The performance

A strange, mesmerising phenomenon that begins with a simple bowl of soup and shoots straight into space from there. G-forces, Adam's apples, weightlessness, and a runaway vacuum cleaner: reality unravels into a universe brewed from broth. Bold and poetic at once, technically impressive, and entirely without words!

This is FLY, a performance like nothing you've seen before, with image and sound carrying the story together, live.

And yes, we make grateful use of a screen. Whatever you make of that, a screen effortlessly grabs attention. FLY IN SCHOOL puts that to smart use: the image on screen doesn't switch the imagination off, it switches it on. Because this isn't watching a video. This is theatre…

Who is it for?

For students at primary and secondary schools. Per class, grade level or group, anything is possible.

How we approach it

• The performance: students watch FLY, fresh and unfiltered. We can run this workshop 2 to 3 times in a row in a single day.

• The conversation: what did you actually see? What worked, what didn't, and why do you think the maker chose this direction?

• Live sound: we show how decisive sound is beneath a scene, with room for the students' own input and creativity.

• The maker's perspective: one layer deeper. What choices, ideas and happy accidents came before it?

• The performance, once more: a rare chance, usually reserved only for professionals.

• Food for thought: students take home a few questions to keep thinking about, such as: how did your experience of the second viewing differ, and why?

What we need

• A space that can be more or less darkened, easily accessible (preferably ground floor with a wide door)

• A flexible approach to that day's schedule

Experience

Daan Mathot, of volDaan Theater, brings years of experience in (music) workshops and working with children. There has always been an affinity for creating with children and young people. He previously worked as a workshop leader in primary and secondary schools across the country for Fort van de Verbeelding. He still occasionally collaborates with the guys from Superjam!
